Funny’s Colorful World of Indiscrimination

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Doug, most remember this 90’s cartoon for his adventures and creative mind. The everyday life of an adolencent youth. Most didn’t realize the message it seemed to be promoting in the background. Besides Doug Funny being a prodominately white character, there was no definate race of people in the cartoon. Funny’s world was filled with people of many different colors, shapes, and sizes. Funny being the white character had to interact with these different people and was indifferent to their differences. His best friend was blue, his secret crush was orange, and his bully was green. I think the underlying message for this cartoon was that the white man is done discriminating because of color of skin, and that they were trying to teach this concept to the youth of the 90’s. which is something we all have seen recently with the election when that generation of youth hit the polls. Everyone in that generation seems so excited to have our first president of color. Do we have Funny to thank for some of our indiffence to differences? i’ll let you be the judge of that.
