Catching up with Helen Cox: Less is More

Helen Cox sits quietly in the shade, an unusual moment in her hectic schedule. In addition to fulfilling her university duties, the geography professor has an especially active life. She enjoys do-it-yourself projects and has built wall units, coffee tables and installed recessed lighting in her home. An avid hiker, swimmer and runner, Cox occasionally competes in marathons and triathlons.
President Says Forethought, Planning, Teamwork and Dialogue Have Helped Campus Weather Economic Storms

Crediting good planning as one of the reasons Cal State Northridge has weathered the economic storms last year, Northridge President Jolene Koester, at her annual convocation address on Thursday, Aug. 19, called on faculty and staff to continue to make student success the priority while maintaining “dialogue and civility” with one another.

When Pete Cassidy ’60 (Physical Education) was a Matador basketball player, the team had to travel to local high school campuses to play. There was no Matadome or gymnasium and the locker room where players suited up for practice was in a small bungalow.

Janice Woolsey ’89, MS ’91 says Cal State Northridge has done a lot for her. She met her husband of 33 years while a student at CSUN; she has enjoyed a career as coordinator of the campus’ Language, Speech and Hearing Center; and she has developed a close network of friends.
