California State University, Northridge’s @CSUN, the campus’ faculty/staff publication is making its online debut. The print version of the newspaper will no longer be published as part of the university’s ongoing effort to save money.

Cal State Northridge doesn’t hibernate for the summer. Each year, nearly 1,000 community children participate in youth camps and K-12 academic enrichment programs on campus. Here’s a peak at what goes on over a summer at CSUN. Video by Krishna Narayanamurti.

Helen Cox sits quietly in the shade, an unusual moment in her hectic schedule. In addition to fulfilling her university duties, the geography professor has an especially active life. She enjoys do-it-yourself projects and has built wall units, coffee tables and installed recessed lighting in her home. An avid hiker, swimmer and runner, Cox occasionally competes in marathons and triathlons.

Crediting good planning as one of the reasons Cal State Northridge has weathered the economic storms last year, Northridge President Jolene Koester, at her annual convocation address on Thursday, Aug. 19, called on faculty and staff to continue to make student success the priority while maintaining “dialogue and civility” with one another.

When Pete Cassidy ’60 (Physical Education) was a Matador basketball player, the team had to travel to local high school campuses to play. There was no Matadome or gymnasium and the locker room where players suited up for practice was in a small bungalow.

Janice Woolsey ’89, MS ’91 says Cal State Northridge has done a lot for her. She met her husband of 33 years while a student at CSUN; she has enjoyed a career as coordinator of the campus’ Language, Speech and Hearing Center; and she has developed a close network of friends.

Apples, cucumbers, corn, raspberries and Valencia oranges are among the summer and fall offerings provided by CSUN’s new Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.

Numerous Cal State Northridge faculty members were recognized for their years of service and contributions to education at the 2010 Honored Faculty Reception at the Grand Salon on May 17.
