(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Dec. 10th, 2008) ―

A truly healthy tree requires proper maintenance, including appropriate pruning, to encourage an attractive appearance and structural soundness. This is especially true of fruit-bearing trees, where a heavy crop load can break weak branches.

Jerry Turney, senior biologist with the Los Angeles County Department of Agriculture, will discuss the basics—the why, when and how—of home tree pruning, with special attention to fruit trees, during the next CSUN-al Gardening session at Cal State Northridge at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10.

“Selecting and siting a tree is just the first step in tree ownership,” said Brenda Kanno, manager of CSUN’s Botanic Garden, which offers the series free to the public. “Maintaining yard trees, especially fruit-bearing species, involves judicious pruning to promote healthy growth and bountiful crops. Mr. Turney will enlighten us on how to prune our trees with these goals in mind.”

While the class is free, registration is required. To register, e-mail botanicgarden@csun.edu. For more information, call (818) 677-3496. Driving and parking directions, as well as classroom location, will be sent upon registration.

The Cal State Northridge Botanic Garden is operated by the university’s Department of Biology and serves as a field site for botany, entomology, photography, painting and other classes. In addition to its outdoor landscapes, the garden also features greenhouses where rare and exotic plants are grown. The garden is open to the community.
