California State University, Northridge Suspends Construction of Valley Performing Arts Center
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 2nd, 2009) ― The state Department of Finance has ordered the CSU system and other state entities to temporarily halt all state-bond funded construction projects. At California State University, Northridge, this emergency action directly affects the Valley Performing Arts Center Project, a new science building, and several minor capital improvement projects.
It is not known how long the suspension will last, however, CSUN has been directed by the CSU System to inform contractors to expect a 90-day suspension.
Other campus projects, not using state bond funds, will not be affected by the suspension. For example, work on a new parking structure and student housing expansion will continue.
“This emergency action has serious consequences for the affected projects and will result in substantially increased costs of construction once work is resumed. We are disappointed that the construction of the Valley Performing Arts Center and badly needed improved space for our academic programs must be delayed,” President Jolene Koester said.
“Even as we acknowledge this difficult situation, we will continue our work, and remain focused and committed to our students and our educational mission,” President Koester added.
