(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 8th, 2009) ―

Cal State Northridge Art Galleries invites the public to view hand-selected student artwork at the 12th Annual High School Art Invitational opening Monday, Jan. 12, at the university.

More than 200 students from 40 San Fernando Valley high schools will participate with displays featuring different types of media including painting, sculpture, video, graphic design and mixed media.

“The Annual High School Art Invitational not only serves as an introduction for high school student artists to the CSUN Art Galleries, but also gives them the opportunity to display their work in a professional setting,” said Jim Sweeters, interim director of CSUN’s Art Galleries.

The exhibit is free and open to the public, and will remain on display through Jan. 31. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., and on Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. The gallery will be closed Monday, Jan. 19. A closing reception will take place on Friday, Jan. 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring light refreshments and music.

“By having the high school artists display their work, they also have the opportunity to compare their artistic performance with that of their peers and to consider

CSUN and, more specifically the art department, as their destination for higher education,” said Sweeters.
