CSUN Named Among the Top 5 Universities for Hispanic Students
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May. 11th, 2009) ― Cal State Northridge was ranked fifth in the nation, and first among California institutions, for awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanic students, according to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education.
The magazine’s annual ranking of the “Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics,” based on degrees awarded to students, appears in its May 4 issue.
“As our most recent and past rankings show, Cal State Northridge has historically been committed to serving the growing and changing needs of a diverse student population and region,” said Northridge President Jolene Koester. “We are proud of this recognition and the affirmation that comes with it of the good work we are doing.”
Northridge ranked fifth in the nation among colleges and universities that awarded bachelor’s degrees. Florida International University was first, followed by The University of Texas-Pan American, The University of Texas at El Paso and The University of Texas at San Antonio. CSUN also ranked 10th in the nation among those institutions that award master degrees.
The rankings are based on information provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) program for the period between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008.
Hispanic Outlook also ranked CSUN second in the nation in awarding degrees to Hispanics in Hispanic studies and in psychology. Northridge was fourth in the nation in awarding degrees to Hispanics in communications, fifth in area studies, and sixth in English literature, visual and performing arts and parks recreation, leisure and fitness studies. CSUN was eighth in degrees awarded in education.
California State University, Northridge is celebrating “50 years of life-changing opportunity” this year. The university has more than 36,000 full- and part-time students and offers 64 bachelor’s and 50 master’s degrees as well as 28 teaching credential programs. Founded in 1958, CSUN is among the largest single-campus universities in the nation and the only four-year public university in the San Fernando Valley. The university serves as the intellectual, economic and cultural heart of the Valley and beyond.
