(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May. 13th, 2009) ―

The Cal State Northridge chapter of Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc., is joining its sister chapters from Cal State L.A. and Loyola Marymount University in hosting a daylong conference on Saturday, May 23, at Northridge designed to prepare Latina middle and high school students for the rigors of college.

Students from throughout the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles as a whole are expected to attend. The Latina Youth Leadership Conference is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Student Union, located on the east side of the campus off Zelzah Street.

The goal of the conference, said student organizer Yuri Treminio, is to help the students “familiarize themselves with college environments, terminology and prerequisites.”

Treminio, a senior majoring in journalism and Central American studies, said conference organizers hope the event will “demystify” college by introducing participants to financial aid opportunities, college students and campus professionals.

The day will include workshops on leadership skills and self-esteem as well as the importance of taking college-preparatory classes in high school and what academic achievements will attract a college’s interest.

“The conference will not only teach the girls what they have to do academically, but also prepare them to go into society as strong and powerful individuals,” said CSUN senior Angelica Curiel, a child development major and president of CSUN’s chapter of Lambda Theta Nu, the first Latina sorority on the west coast.

Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc., was founded in 1986 at California State University, Chico, becoming the first Latina-based sorority in the region. The CSUN chapter was launched more than 14 years ago. Among the organization’s goals is to foster leadership skills, community service and academic excellence in young women.
