(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 6th, 2009) ―

Cal State Northridge’s Art Galleries present two artists’ interpretations of the desert in an exhibition running from Aug. 24 through Oct. 10.

“Arid Eden” exhibits the work of Lauren Richardson and Michael C. McMillen, who project their personal narratives onto the vast spaces of the desert landscape.

“We are excited to have these two mid-career Los Angeles artists open our fall semester and share their unique view of the California desert with our students,” said interim gallery director Jim Sweeters.

Lauren Richardson’s style is notable for using the desert’s shifting forms as a metaphor for attachment, loss and inexorable change.

The show also includes Michael C. McMillen’s work, North Star, a combination of installation art and film that creates a madcap stream of deconstructed consciousness heading gleefully towards annihilation.

An artist’s talk will be given Monday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m., with a reception on Friday, Aug. 28, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., and on Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. The gallery will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, Labor Day.

Admission is free and open to the public. Parking is $5 in student lot D6 and E6, located on the north side of campus off Halsted Street. For more information about “Arid Eden” and related events, call the Art Galleries at (818) 677-2156, or visit www.csun.edu/artgalleries/.
