CSUN’s History Department Holds Lecture of the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 26th, 2009) ―
For more than a quarter of a century, a wall literally divided Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc. On Nov. 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall started to come down and the reunification of both Europe and specifically Germany began.
Join members of Cal State Northridge’s Department of History on Wednesday, Oct. 28, as they celebrate this monumental moment in history with a special lecture, “20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall: From Peaceful Revolution to German Unification.” The event will take place in the Presentation Room of the Oviatt Library at 3 p.m. The Oviatt Library is located in the center of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
The event will include a presentation by Donal O’Sullivan, assistant history professor at CSUN, and an introduction by Northridge history professor Michael Meyer.
“I felt it was important to participate in the city-wide festivities commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall – the incredibly significant event which dramatically signaled the end of the division of Berlin, Germany and Europe, marking the end of the Cold War,” Meyer said. “We will feature an exhibit of posters titled, ‘From the Democratic Revolution to the Unification of Germany,’ which takes us back to the protest movement in the cities of East Germany, to the actual events of Nov. 9, 1989.
“Our program will be introduced by Library Dean Susan Curzon,” he said. “I will then reflect upon the events from a personal perspective and introduce our featured speaker, history professor Donal O’Sullivan, a specialist on the Soviet Union, who will cover the historical events.”
The event is co-sponsored by the Oviatt Library, Associated Graduate Students of History, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Los Angeles and the German American Cultural Society.
