(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 22nd, 2009) ―

Award-winning historian and author Anthony Pagden will explore the relationships between European empires, imperialism and the New World during a special lecture hosted by Cal State Northridge’s Atlantic History Center on Thursday, Nov. 19.

His presentation, “The ‘Newness’ of the New World,” is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Whitsett Room on the fourth floor of Sierra Hall, located on the west side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Pagden, a professor of political science and history at UCLA, has done extensive research on the relationships-cultural, political and legal-between the peoples of Europe and its overseas settlements and those of the non-European world from the Atlantic to the Pacific. His primary interest is in the political theory of “empire,” in how the West sought to explain to itself how and why the West came to dominate so much of the world, and in the present consequences of the erosion of that domination.

He is the author or editor of several books, including “Lords of All the World: Ideologies of Empire in Britain, France and Spain,” “Peoples and Empires: Europeans and the Rest of the World, from Antiquity to the Present,” and “Worlds at War: The 2,500 Year Struggle Between East and West.”

Assistant professor of history Chris Magra called Pagden “the world’s foremost expert on imperialism” and said his lecture will “cause people to question their assumptions about the nature of power and colonialism.”

The Atlantic History Center is committed to bringing to Cal State Northridge internationally recognized scholars who specialize in various aspects of Atlantic history.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available on the west side of the campus for $6. For more information, call the Department of History at (818) 677-3566.
