SPECIAL TO THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR
With one swift overhead kick, Karina Camacho saved Arizona from a sure defeat.
Less than two minutes later, Renae Cuellar gave the Wildcats the perfect ending to a hard-fought weekend.
Cuellar scored with 4:37 remaining in the second and final overtime as Arizona overcame the heat and a testy opponent to defeat Cal State-Northridge 2-1 Sunday at Murphey Stadium.
Arizona improved to 6-2 after weekend victories over Northridge and Michigan.
In the 104th minute, a Northridge free kick from Kristal Phillips took a deflection and popped over UA goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre and headed straight toward the Arizona goal.
“As soon as I saw Chelsea come out, I said in my head, ‘I hope someone’s there to cover,” UA coach Dan Tobias said.
Sure enough, Camacho retreated and cleared the ball off the line with a bicycle kick, sparing Arizona from a loss.
“I saw her make that save and I said, ‘let’s go,’ ” McIntyre said. “That was our saving grace.”
In the 106th minute, McIntyre’s goal kick was misplayed by Northridge defender Jasmine Pratt, allowing Cuellar to attack the Matadors’ goal. She shook off a tackle and slid the ball underneath goalkeeper Leah Elliott.
“The girl hit me hard, but instead of just falling and sitting on the ground, I saw that the goalkeeper was out and finished it,” Cuellar said.
The freshman forward played limited minutes after suffering a sprained ankle Friday.
“I got it kicked a few times, but I wanted to give the team all I had even if it was only for a little bit,” she said.
Northridge struck first in the 33nd minute when the Matadors caught Arizona napping after the Wildcats nearly scored on the other end.
A quickly taken goal kick found Farryn Townley, who got behind the UA defense and scored on a breakaway.
After what Tobias described as a “loud” pep talk in the locker room at halftime, Arizona created chances immediately to start the second half, and equalized in the 49th minute when London King redirected a low cross from Brianna Caceres.
“I told them that we had officially played our worst half of the year and that it was over,” Tobias said.
King said, “The main key was that we wanted to catch them off-guard.”
In the second half, fatigue set in and the game got quite chippy, climaxing in ejections for UA’s Sally Thurner and Northridge’s Nalena Betancourt.
The pair got into a scuffle that saw both players throw a punch after getting their arms tied together as the ball went out of bounds for a Northridge goal kick.
Both players will be suspended for their teams’ next game.
