Geography alum Philip Rex Winters has died

Philip Rex Winters, 76, longtime resident of Oxnard, passed away Dec. 27, 2008, at his home in Santa Maria. Rex was born Oct. 8, 1932, in Oakland, Calif.

Rex is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (Chavez); and his sons, Raymond, Philip and wife, Caryn, Winters, and Vincent and wife, Barbara, Winters; grandchildren, Jennifer and John Askew, Matthew, Amanda, Mark, Claire, Samantha, Chanel, Max, Ashleigh; and great-grandchild, Eleanor.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Wyatt; and son, Adrian.

Rex graduated from Oxnard High School in 1950 and went on to receive his MA in geography, from California State University Northridge and his BA in geology from University of California, Berkeley. He did his postgraduate studies in geodesy at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.

Rex worked for various oil companies, private consulting contractors and the Department of the Navy. His early work took him to more than 50 countries around the world to help establish geodetic positioning systems. He was a senior engineer for the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory and a senior executive for the Naval Energy and Environmental Support Activity (NEESA), where he received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

One of Rex’s real passions was education. He was a senior adjunct professor at the University of La Verne and taught for the Ventura Community College District for almost 35 years, teaching oceanography and other science courses.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Jan. 3, 2009, at Santa Clara Church, Oxnard. Inurnment will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Rex with a donation to a charity that was very near and dear to his heart, St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
