(December 31, 2008)

Dr. William E. Schlosser
Dr. William E. Schlosser, Simi Valley resident for 45 years, termed by the mayor of Los Angeles, “The Father of Theater for the San Fernando Valley.” He started The Teenage Drama Workshop in a circus tent in 1956, before CSUN (then called San Fernando State College) had even built a building.

Born and raised in Chicago and after four years in World War II, he returned to Chicago Teacher’s College to finish his bachelor’s degree; went on to Northwestern for a master’s; then eight years of teaching theater at University of Oregon and earned a doctor of education. He decided to go south and taught at L.A. State until 30 people were picked to start a new college in the San Fernando Valley.

He leaves a wife, Jean, 61 1/2 years married; two sons, William Bert and Wade Edwin; plus one daughter, Perri Jean; three Schlosser grandchildren, Alyssa, Liam and Eve; plus two daughters-in-law, Debora and Debra.

He died Dec. 28, 2008, of dementia after 88 years of using that creative brain.

No flowers, but memorial gifts can be made in Bill’s name for the new CSUN Theater, at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, CA 91330.
