Titans take down Matador men’s basketball

(January 22, 2009)

NORTHRIDGE - Jacques Streeter scored a career-high 27 points and Marcio Lassiter matched his with 17 Wednesday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 91-87 Big West Conference victory at Cal State Northridge.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Titans (9-10, 3-4) and avenged a 26-point loss to Northridge (6-10, 3-3) on Dec. 29. It was CSF’s sixth victory in a row in The Matadome.

Josh Jenkins led Northridge with 19 points, 18 of them in the second half.

Ray Miller’s basket off a feed from Josh Akognon gave Fullerton an 88-84 lead with 28 seconds left. After Tony Osunsanmi scored inside for the Matadors, Akognon made two free throws with seven seconds left.

Jenkins hit 3-pointer for Northridge with 1.2 seconds to go, but Chris Rhymes iced the game by making his second free-throw try.

Fullerton took the lead for good at 78-77 on two Streeter free throws.

An Akognon bucket with 1:50 to play extended the lead to 84-79 but Jenkins hit a 3-pointer to set the stage for Miller, who got a rare start and finished with six points.

“It was a great win for us,” said associate coach Andy Newman said.

“We’ve been up and down and it was good to see us play well and play together. I thought that was the key.

Akognon finished with 16 points after getting only eight in the first Northridge game. Gerard Anderson had 14 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.

Rhymes got his first start and contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds.

Tremaine Townsend led all rebounders with 13 before fouling out along with Willie Galick in the closing minutes.
