Vincent Cordell converted a layup with 11.8 seconds remaining, lifting the Cal State Northridge Matadors over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 72-70, in Big West Conference play at the Thunderdome.

Cordell had only four points, to go with seven boards, as CSUN (8-10, 5-3 BWC) came out on top for the second straight game. Kenny Daniels led the way with 14 points, while Tremaine Townsend, Josh Jenkins and Rodrigue Mels all had 13 points.

Leading the charge for UCSB (8-12, 2-6) was Chris Devine, who posted a double- double of 16 points and 12 boards. James Powell tallied 14 points and Jaime Serna finished with 11, as the Gauchos were handed their third consecutive defeat.

The Matadors went 5-of-9 from three-point range and 12-of-17 at the foul line in the first period, opening a 39-33 lead at the half.

After Cordell gave CSUN the lead with 11.8 seconds left, the Gauchos had a chance to win, but Jordan Weiner’s three-point try in the closing moments was off the mark and the Matadors held on for the two-point win.

The Matadors controlled the boards, 40-32, and that takes into account a 14-8 edge at the offensive end.
