Coaches are sidelined by furloughs at several Division I universities

Even college sports are not immune to cutbacks as the economic slump and state budget crises bite deeper into higher education. According to USA Today, a number of athletics programs in Division I, the NCAA’s top competitive level, are requiring their coaches to accept furloughs — just like all other campus employees — of five to 15 days. The coaches may show up for work, but they will not be paid. And for coaches with pay packages in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, a few days of furlough can mount quickly. Among the coaches subject to furloughs, the newspaper reported, are those at Arizona State, Clemson, and Utah State Universities, and the University of Maryland. —Andrew Mytelka
