The community-minded attitude and ethics of La Crescenta business owner Todd Thornbury make his business, American Softub, an obvious choice for selection as the Crescenta Valley Town Council’s business of the month, said Town Council President Steve Pierce.
The council agreed earlier this year to honor local businesses on a more regular basis that display a high regard for their place in the community and that serve as role models for other businesses.
The council selected American Softub, a pristine shop that has a Foothill Boulevard storefront which is always maintained despite the busyness of owning and operating the business and the personal tragedy recently faced by its owner. Thornbury was presented with the award during last night’s town council meeting.
“Just the look of his business reflects the qualities we want here,” Pierce said, adding, “This isn’t just about the business; it’s about Todd and his family and what a benefit he is to the community.”
Thornbury has been in business in La Crescenta for 13 years. American Softub has been at its current location at 2520 Foothill Blvd. since 2003. Prior to that, he operated the business out of his La Crescenta home.

Thornbury grew up in La Crescenta and graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1981. Six years later, he married his high school sweetheart, Laura, who died of cancer this past December. The couple have three children: Winston, 19, a student at Glendale Community College; Madison, 17, a student at Advanced Path Academy in Glendale; and Morgan, 12, a student at Rosemont Middle School.
Thornbury attended Glendale Community College and, in 1986, earned a marketing degree from Cal State Northridge.
American Softub is one of 250 Softubs, Inc. dealerships around the world. Thornbury’s father, Tom, started the company and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Despite current economic woes, Thornbury said his business is doing well, but could be better. And he’s confident the products he offers are needed in a time when people are facing difficult times.
Thornbury said he’s anxious to help de-stress other business owners with his line of portable spas and hot tubs.
“If you’re feeling the stress, come see me,” he said, adding, “I’m in the stress management business.”
