Cal State Northridge basketball player Deon Tresvant and three others pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of commercial burglary and grand theft.
The charges step from an arrest of allegedly more than $6,600 in merchandise from a Best Buy store in Porter Ranch on New Year’s Day.
Coach Bobby Braswell’s 22-year-old son, Jeffery, was also charged. A Best Buy employee, he is accused of allowing three friends - Tresvant, Phannuel Gbewonyo and Dallas Rutherford - to check out merchandise without paying.
CSUN had hoped to get Tresvant back in time for its final four games of the season, but that is not likely because Tresvant’s next court date is March 16 - more than a week after the Matadors’ last regular-season game.
“Deon’s status with the basketball team hasn’t changed,” said CSUN athletic director Rick Mazzuto. “He remains a student in good standing with the university but we will continue to withhold him from competition until his court case is resolved.”
