Sue Malter has been appointed Director of National Accounts for VITAS Innovative Hospice Care®, one of the nation’s oldest and largest providers of end-of-life care. Malter brings more than 20 years of experience, including 14 with VITAS, to her new role.
Malter will negotiate and oversee managed care contracts for 22 VITAS programs in California, Illinois, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan and Wisconsin, and also will be responsible for developing business relationships with national physicians’ groups.
“Sue brings considerable experience in managed health care contracting, as well as working with physician groups, to her new role,” says Brian Connor, VITAS vice president of national accounts. “Her knowledge of VITAS and her experience with managed care in California will go a long way as VITAS develops strong client relationships in Western and Midwestern states.”
Malter joined VITAS in 1994 as a hospice representative for the Los Angeles and Ventura County program and was quickly promoted to director of market development. She was named senior director of market development in 2002 and was selected to the prestigious VITAS Leadership Council as the top director of market development nationwide. She was promoted to national director of market development in 2005 and to director of managed care in 2006. In this role she led the development of managed care agreements on behalf of VITAS’ nine California programs.
Malter’s professional affiliations include membership in the American Cancer Society, the Medical Oncology Association of Southern California, the Community Residential Care Association of California, Parkinson’s Resource Organization, the Alzheimer’s Association, ALS Association, the Los Angeles Home Care Association and the Ventura County Home Care Association. She received a bachelor’s degree in health science from California State University in Northridge.
VITAS Innovative Hospice Care®, a pioneer and leader in the hospice movement since 1978, is one of the nation’s largest providers of end-of-life care. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, VITAS (pronounced VEE-tahs) operates 45 hospice programs in 16 states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin). At the conclusion of the fourth quarter of 2008, VITAS reported an average daily census of 11,627.
