— The Morehead State women’s golf team improved on its Monday round to fire a 316 team score on Tuesday and finished in fourth place at its own Morehead State Spring Kickoff at the 6,129-yard, par 72 Victoria Lakes Course at River Ridge Golf Club.
Florida International led from wire-to-wire in the three-day tournament and finished with a 31-over-par 895 to win the event by 44 strokes over second place Eastern Michigan, which totaled a 939 three-day team score. The MSU Eagles finished the event with a 956 team score. Eastern Kentucky was fifth, followed by Cal State Northridge, Akron and Cal State Bakersfield. UC Riverside finished third ahead of MSU.
Individually, FIU garnerend the top three spots abnd four of the top seven. Paula Hurtado and Belen Buendia each finished with a 221 total score, and Hurtado defeated her teammate on the second playoff hole to claim medalist homors. FIU’s Christina Marin was third, and Eastern Michigan’s Stephany Fleet and Darby Peters rounded out the top five.
Morehead State’s top finisher was sophomore Paige Lausier, who came in eighth with a 235. She fired a 75 on Tuesday. Freshman Emma Jonsson shot a 79 Tuesday and finished in a tie for 10th with a 237. Freshman Sara Jackson also carded a 79 Tuesday and concluded the event in 16th place with a 241.
Junior Darlene Bognot finished in a two-way tie for 18th, shooting an 83 Tuesday, and Lynn Grunkemeyer had an 88 Tuesday and a 264 for the tournament for 42nd place.
MSU junior Ashley Redmond was tops among the individuals as she carded a three-day total of 246 and tied for 23rd place. Karolina Tunstig was tied for 32nd overall with a 254.
