Pacific loses to Matadors in softball doubleheader and in men’s volleyball

Crowd gives Pacific a lift in win

A record crowd watched junior pitcher Jamie Niley throw five stellar innings of relief to help the Pacific baseball team beat UC Davis 11-7 Saturday night at Klein Family Field.

Niley earned the win after holding the Aggies to one run on four hits. J.B. Brown went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBI for the Tigers (9-12, 2-0 Big West Conference). St. Mary’s High graduate Ty Kelly went 3 for 4 with two RBI for the Aggies (3-16, 0-2).

The Tigers established a new attendance record with a crowd of 964, surpassing the previous program record of 880, set in last season’s home opener.

“Everybody likes playing in front of a lot of people cheering for you,” Pacific coach Ed Sprague said.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL Tigers lose pair

At Northridge, defensive miscues proved costly for Pacific. The Tigers opened Big West Conference play with two losses, falling 3-0 and 4-2 to host Cal State Northridge in a doubleheader. The Tigers committed three errors in each game.

Cal State Northridge pitcher Deborah Duran earned a win and a save for the Matadors (22-9, 2-0 Big West). Chelsea Engle and Heidi Helberg took the losses for the Tigers (15-17, 0-2), and Casey Goldsand’s 15-game hitting streak ended. She went 0 for 6 on the day.

COLLEGE BASEBALL Delta 6,American River 5

At Delta, the Mustangs (20-9, 8-2 Big 8) took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Beavers (11-15, 3-7). Thomas Shull’s sacrifice fly brought in Vince Devencenzi, and Aaron Rowley and Vince Canale had RBI singles.

Women’s tennis Pacific 7,CS Fullerton 0

At Fullerton, senior Jolanta Twarowska beat Shelly Injejikian 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position, and sophomore Jenifer Widjaja routed Leslie Bullock 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 for the Tigers (8-9, 4-1 Big West).

Men’s tennis UC Santa Barbara 4, Pacific 3

At Pacific, the Tigers (8-5, 1-1 Big West) lost to the Gauchos (6-5, 3-1) despite a doubles victory and singles wins by Moritz Starke and Artem Gramma.

Men’s volleyball CS Northridge 3,Pacific 0

At Pacific, the Matadors (20-4, 13-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) beat the Tigers (3-21, 0-15) 30-19, 30-20, 30-27. Jason Borchin had nine kills for Pacific.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Brookside Christian 18, Chavez 8

At Chavez, David Hamlett went 4 for 4 with two triples, and six RBI and David Scott was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI as the Knights (6-2) beat the Titans (2-8).

Trojans win two

At Lincoln, pitcher John Oberholtzer (1-0) threw seven strikeouts and gave up four hits in his first start of the season as the Trojans (8-5) shut out visiting Kerman 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Matt Collier went 3 for 3, and Stevie Robinson went 2 for 4 with four RBI to lead Lincoln to an 11-4 win in Game 2.

Franklin 12,South San Francisco 8

At Franklin, the Yellowjackets (7-2) had 13 hits in the win. Ernest Urrea went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Matt Hansen had a home run and two RBI, and Richie Rhoades and Robert Corralejo had two hits each for Franklin.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO CS Northridge 12, Pacific 3

At Northridge, the Tigers opened Big West Conference play with a loss that dropped them to 7-18 overall. The Matadors (14-13, 1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never were threatened. Kailee Bucknum had two goals, and Dara Tarawahara and Lindsey Pengilly each had one goal for Pacific, which plays at noon today at UC Santa Barbara.

MEN’S SWIMMING Delta finishes first

At Solano, Jordan Litz had a perfect day with a total of 100 points from five events as the Mustangs placed first at the Solano Invitational with a score of 562.50. Chabot finished second at 457 and Modesto came in third with 267.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK Lincoln runs fast time

At Stanford, the Trojans’ 1,600-meter relay team of David Carmon, Brandin Cooks, Bobby Bivens and John Wiernicki finished second at the Stanford Invitational in 3:23.85. Lincoln coach Craig Pearce said it is the fastest time in the Sac-Joaquin Section this season and could get the team entered in the Arcadia Invitational, a prestigious national event.

Chavez runners place

At Stanford, senior Alima Kamara took second in the 400 meters with a season’s best 56.79, and anchored the second place 400 relay team of Shaprice Jones, Octavia Duncan and Lakana Pheng to a 49.14 finish at the Stanford Invitational. Senior Andy Estrada placed sixth in the long jump with 19.10 for the Chavez boys.
