Former soccer player Sean Franklin like out for pro soccer season

(May 28, 2009)

Last season’s Rookie of the Year,  LA Galaxy defender Sean Franklin, will miss the next 4-6 months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn right upper hamstring tendon.

Franklin in the Galaxy’s 1-1 draw with Columbus on May 17. He underwent successful surgery on Tuesday.

Injury problems plagued the player from the start of the year. Franklin missed the first month of preseason after undergoing surgery to repair a bilateral sports hernia, which was first diagnosed while he was training with the U.S. National Team in January.  Franklin was back on the field a month later for the Pan-Pacific Championship.

He went on to appear in eight of the Galaxy’s first nine games of the season before suffering the injury against Columbus, starting in each match he played.

As a rookie in 2008, Franklin set a Galaxy record in minutes played by a rookie with 2,385 minutes. The 24-year-old Cal State-Northridge graduate tallied one assist last season and spent much of the year playing in central defense before moving to right back this season.
