BOS HONORED
Ken Bos, former Rio Hondo College wrestling coach, will receive a Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. His name will be placed permanently on a plaque within the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Okla.

Bos and eight others will be honored at the Hall of Fame Honors Banquet Saturday in Lake Forest.

“We are proud of Ken Bos and the many accomplishments that he has made throughout his career,” André Quintero, president of the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees, said. “His tenure at Rio Hondo College was extraordinary and we want to congratulate him and the others for this tremendous honor.”

Bos, who retired five years ago, directed Rio Hondo to eight conference, three regional and two state championships. Thirty-four of his wrestlers became All-Americans.

He attended Artesia High School, Cerritos College and Cal Poly, San Luis Obisp. He was a three-time All-American at Cal Poly.

BEST IN HIS FIELD
Downey High School grad Rolando Felizola of Cal State Northridge has been named the Big West Conference field athlete of the year.

A two-time runner-up in the triple jump at the Big West Conference track and field championships, Felizola won both the triple and long jumps at this year’s conference meet.

His 24-6 1/4 jump won the long jump and reached NCAA regional standards. He also won his specialty, the triple, with a mark of 51-7 1/4.

He will compete in both events at the NCAA regionals in Oregon Friday and Saturday.

At Downey, he established freshman, sophomore and varsity triple jump records.

ON WATCH LIST

San Jose State’s Ronnie Castillo, a St. Paul High School graduate, is one of 44 centers on the 2009 Rimington Trophy spring watch list.
The award, named after former Nebraska center Dave Rimington, goes to the best center in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The 6-foot, 292-pound Castillo is the Spartans’ most experienced offensive lineman heading into the fall. He has 21 major college starts since 2006 and has played both guard positions and center. In 2008, the three-year letter winner split time at center with Justin Paysinger and returning letterwinner Robbie Reed.

Castillo is one of five centers from the Western Athletic Conference on the list.

RAMIREZ SHARP
Alhambra High School graduate Noe Ramirez takes a 7-1 record and 2.93 ERA into the NCAA baseball regionals for Cal State Fullerton, which earned the NCAA’s No. 2 overall national seed.

The Titans (42-14) host a regional that also includes Utah (26-29), Gonzaga (35-16) and Georgia Southern (42-15). Fullerton plays Utah at 7 p.m. Friday in its first game.

Ramirez, a freshman righthander, pitched eight innings of three-hit ball in a 7-1 win over Long Beach State Saturday in his final regular-season outing. He retired 19 in a row from the second through eighth innings and faced only three batters over the minimum.

IT’S ACADEMIC
Cal State Dominguez Hills senior first baseman Jon Alia has been named Co-SIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for NCAA Division II.

He set school records with a .467 batting average, 20 home runs and 78 RBIs while earning CCAA player of the year honors. The kinesiology major carries a 3.90 grade point average.
