(July 10, 2009)
Debuting July 11 at the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art is “Organic Abstractions,” featuring new works by Santa Ynez artist Pamela Zwehl-Burke.
A reception will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be served, and admission is free. Many of the works will be available for purchase.
The exhibit displays large, colorful oilstick drawing/ paintings, part of an ongoing series of compositions based on observed reality.
“Using oilstick I could remain a draw-er, while edging toward painting and color,” says Zwehl-Burke, “and I could excerpt pieces of the natural world which seemed to be some thing and some energy at the same time — glimpses of abstracted, designed, richly textured and interwoven shapes and colors which edged on the familiar, and edged away from it.”
All of the images on exhibit are composed so they can be viewed and hung in all four directions. The eye of the viewer is kept interested and entertained by the color intensity, the unity and variety of value and orientation of shape or form.
Zwehl-Burke studied art in Germany and France, returning to the States to study at Pitzer, in Claremont, before receiving a Master of Arts at California State University, Northridge, and a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. She taught in Germany and the United States, and spent 25 years teaching college-level printmaking, figure drawing, artists’ books and drawing. Recently retired from Santa Barbara City College, she lives on 5 acres in Santa Ynez with her husband, Harold.
The Elverhoj Museum of History and Art, at 1624 Elverhoy Way in Solvang, is open 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. (Suggested donation is $3.) Children 12 and younger and members are free.
“Organic Abstractions” will remain on display through Sept. 6. For information, call 686-1211 or visit www.elverhoj.org.
