California State University professors voted Friday in favor of negotiating the furlough plan presented by Chancellor Charles Reed, but they also voted that they have “no confidence” in his leadership.
California Faculty Association President Lillian Taiz said 54 percent of faculty voted to take two unpaid days per month for one year to help the CSU cope with its $584 million deficit. And 80 percent voted that they have no confidence in Reed.
“Faculty expressed anger at the way the chancellor is handling the crisis at our university,” said John Travis, chair of the union’s bargaining team and a professor of political science at Humboldt State University.
The California Faculty Association is the CSU’s largest employee union, representing 23,000 professors and librarians. Their vote had been seen as a key piece in how the university will manage its historic budget crisis.
The union and the university will now enter negotiations to finalize the furlough plan.
