(July 31, 2009)
Springfield Cardinals left-hander Sam Freeman has been put on the disabled list with a sore left elbow. The hard-throwing reliever posted a 3.52 earned run average in 15 Double-A appearances and is at the Cardinals’ rehab facility in Florida.
Right-hander Chuckie Fick takes Freeman’s roster spot. The 22-year-old posted a 4.24 ERA in Low-A Quad Cities to start the year before being promoted to High-A Palm Beach, where he was 3-3 with a 4.92 ERA.
Fick was the Cardinals’ 15th round pick in 2007 out of Cal State Northridge and is the son of St. Louis scout Chuck Fick.
Also today, the Cardinals released reliever Kenny Maiques. The right-hander —once one of the organization’s top 15 prospects — began the season in Springfield but struggled with his control, walking 13 batters in 3.2 innings. He was sent to extended spring training on April 23 and was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a drug of abuse four weeks later.
