Violinist Karen Palmer, bassoonist Carolyn Beck and pianist Ed Yarnelle will fill Sunday’s service at Redlands United Church of Christ with music
REDLANDS - A trio of professional musicians from local colleges and universities will provide music for a music and Communion service 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Redlands United Church of Christ.
The musicians are violinist Karen Palmer, bassoonist Carolyn Beck and pianist and organist Ed Yarnelle.
Karen Palmer is an artist teacher, teaching violin and string instrument techniques at the University of Redlands School of Music. She is also a tenured first violinist with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra.
She founded the summer workshops of the University of Redlands Community School of Music and the Arts and for the past seven years has directed and conducted the workshops’ youth symphony, chamber orchestra, band, chamber strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.
Palmer received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Pacific Union College and a master of music degree in violin performance from the University of Redlands.
Carolyn Beck is the principal bassoonist with the San Bernardino and Redlands symphonies, is a member of the Glendale Symphony and performs with other orchestras and early music groups.
She is a frequent performer of chamber music and solo recitals and a champion of new music. In the fall of 2004 she performed John Williams’ concerto for bassoon and orchestra with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. Her solo CD “Beck and Call” was released in November 2005 on Crystal Records.She is adjunct bassoon teacher at the University of Redlands, Pomona College and Idyllwild Arts Academy. She was formerly principal bassoonist of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Orchesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias in Spain.
She received the degrees of doctor of musical arts from the Manhattan School of Music, master of music from the Yale School of Music and bachelor of arts in bassoon performance from California State University, Northridge.
Ed Yarnelle, originally from Fort Wayne, Ind., came to California in 1991 after receiving a doctorate in keyboard performance under Kriby Doriath at Ball State University.
Yarnelle has been organist and choir director for the Hemet United Methodist Church since 1995. He founded the Yucaipa Community String Orchestra in 1996 and directed it until 2008. He has also been an active member of The Spinet music club in Redlands.
Yarnelle has given solo piano and organ recitals throughout the region. He teaches music and psychology courses at San Bernardino Valley College and performs chamber music with the Amabile Trio.
Palmer and Yarnelle will playing the prelude for Sunday’s service, “Adoration” by Felix Borowski. They will also play the prayerful selection, “Sicilienne” by Maria von Paradis.
The trio will play the major work of the service, “Sonata in G Major for Violin, Continuo and Piano” by J.S. Bach.
Beck and Yarnelle will play the offertory, “Impromptu” by Reinhold Gliere.
During Communion, Beck and Yarnelle will play “Sonata in F, Op. 24, No. 3, `Largo’ ” by Francois Devienne as the bread is passed. While the cup is passed, they will play the “Larghetto” from the “Concerto in B Flat Major, F. 8 No. 36″ by Vivaldi.
At the conclusion of the service, Beck and Yarnelle will play the “Partita for Bassoon and Piano, `Jewell Lake,’ ” by Bill Douglas.
