This is one of those “only in California” stories …
Chapman University will auction off permits to a premium parking lot to students and faculty who are, essentially, too lazy to walk 5 minutes from a nearby lot on the small, bucolic Orange campus.
The new “cash for convenience” plan was the idea of economist and Chapman President James L. Doti and was refined by some of the school’s renowned economics faculty, after prompting by student commuters — even though there is sufficient parking even when the university is busy.
Students had complained that at peak class hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., central locations like the 1,000-spot Lastinger football field lot are filled. Students are forced to park as far away as the Barrera law school structure, which usually has space left.
The Barrera lot is a 5 minute hike away from the campus center, even according to Google. The journey involves braving just one signaled crosswalk.
