Cal State Long Beach — which draws about one-third of its students from Orange County — will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 13th, while employees take a furlough day as part of a larger plan to cut costs and help the state balance its budget.

(Cal State Fullerton will be open.)

CSULB officials say in a statement that Thursday, “… will be the first of 17 State Budget Closure Days employees will observe over the next year to accommodate nearly half of the campus’ $42 million budget reduction from last year.

“On Thursday, which typically would be a busy day as the university prepares for the fall semester that starts at the end of the month, nearly everything will be closed. The University Library, the Student Health Center, Brotman Hall, the Horn Center: all will be closed. No public events will be held in the Walter Pyramid, the Carpenter Center, the Miller Japanese Garden or the University Art Museum.

“Limited summer school offerings will continue on Thursday so that students can complete their studies.

“Unfortunately, this is the first of many State Budget Closure Days when the university will not be able to serve its students and the public with the level of educational support that we’re used to providing,” said CSULB President F. King Alexander.
