Cal State Fullerton canceling up to 150 class sections

Cal State Fullerton said today that, “Due to a precipitous drop in state-support as a result of California’s ongoing budget crisis, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences has cancelled from 140 to 150 class sections, or close to 10 % of the 1,600 sections which the College planned to offer when fall semester begins August 22, a step which could impact as many as 3,200 students in the college.

“The university will offer approximately 5,000 class sections for fall 2009, and it is doing its best to enable every student who wishes to carry a full course load (or 15-16 units) this fall to do so. Enrollment is always a moving target at this time of year, even under normal circumstances, and final fall semester numbers won’t be available until the university completes its regularly scheduled census in late September.”

Chris Bugbee, a campus spokesman, says the college will still offer a broad array of classes, but there will be fewer sections.

It might be necessary to make additional section cuts during spring semester.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest of the university’s eight colleges, employing 334 full-time professors and featuring 14 departments and divisions. The subject areas include everything from sociology and gerontology to anthropology, English and environmental studies.
