SAT scores drop slightly for incoming freshmen

(August 26, 2009)

Students entering college this fall posted slightly lower average SAT scores compared with the class of 2008, according to national test data released Tuesday by the College Board. Reading and writing scores for the class of 2009 were down one point each, while math scores held steady.

Over the past 10 years, math scores have risen four points while reading scores have dropped four points.

The 2009 class was the largest and most diverse group of test-takers in the history of the SAT college entrance test, with 40 percent of them considered ethnic minorities. That’s up from 29 percent 10 years ago.

California’s average scores were lower than the average national scores in reading and math, but higher than the national score in writing.

The SAT is the most widely used standardized college admission test.
