The parents of a university freshman from Texas who died after an alleged hazing in San Luis Obispo have sued the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Scott and Julia Starkey of Austin, Texas, filed the lawsuit Monday against the Illinois-based fraternity and its local chapter over the December death of their son Carson Starkey.

Police say the 18-year-old student had to drink a bag full of alcoholic beverages as part of the pledging process at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. He was found dead with a blood-alcohol level between 0.39 percent and 0.44 percent.

The lawsuit also names nine members of the suspended Cal Poly fraternity.

The Starkeys claim the fraternity should have taken further measures to prevent excessive alcohol consumption.
