The governor has signed a bill that provides more oversight for private colleges such as Brooks Institute, a for-profit photography and visual arts school that has a campus in Ventura.

However, he vetoed a bill that would have required the state’s public colleges to be more open about donations and other records.
The governor signed AB 48 Sunday night, re-establishing the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education. The bureau will review some private schools’ financial affairs, faculty qualifications and facilities before granting approval.
The legislation does not affect private colleges accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, such as California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
The governor vetoed SB 218, which would have expanded the state’s Public Records Act to include foundations that raise money for public universities
