Soccer player Sydney Vermillion did well in game against Riverside

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Lauren Bustos (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2006) Fordham women’s soccer, senior: The former two-time All-Area Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year and reigning Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year has bolstered a defense that’s held the opposition to consecutive conference shutout victories for the Rams.

The Rams defeated Temple, 2-0, on Sunday and St. Joseph’s, 1-0, on Friday. Fordham’s won three straight overall, improving to 6-10-1 and 5-3 in the Atlantic 10.

Bustos, one of only two Rams players to have started all 17 matches, keys a defense that’s allowed 26 goals and tallied three shutouts.

The team faces La Salle on Friday in another conference tilt.

Sydney Vermillion (Crescenta Valley High, 2006) CSUN women’s soccer, senior: Vermillion notched her second assist of the season on Farryn Townley’s game-winning goal on Friday at UC Riverside in a 1-0 win for CSUN.

The game came in the midst of the Matadors’ current three-match winning streak, all of the wins coming via shutout against Big West opponents.

Vermillion, a four-year starting defender, has played in all 16 of her team’s matches and started 10.

The Matadors are currently 8-8 and 4-2 in conference with six shutouts and 20 goals against in 16 matches.

With just three games left on the year, Vermillion and Co. host Cal State Bakersfield on Friday to begin a three-match homestand.

Vivien Wadeck (Glendale Community College, 2008) Cal State Los Angeles women’s cross-country, senior: The former Vaqueros standout finished 11th overall on Saturday at the Northridge Invitational, running to a finish in a time of 18 minutes 26.76 seconds. Cal State L.A. took eighth overall with its No. 3 finisher Justina Sadauskaite, another GCC alum, finishing 46th in 19:52.51.

Another former GCC runner, Zitlalic Ley, running for host CSUN, finished 15th overall and second for her team in 18:42.22. CSUN finished fourth in the nine-team race.

Crescenta Valley High graduate Makenzie Mabry came in at 69th in 21:38 for San Diego State, which took sixth.

Wadeck, a reigning All-American, won the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Female Cross-Country Runner of the Week for the week of Oct. 5-11 after winning the Vanguard Invitational on Oct. 10 in 17:23, leading her team to fifth place in the 5K race. Wadeck won the award for the second time this season and fifth time in her career.

Wadeck and Cal State L.A. return to action at the CCAA Championships in McKinleyville on Saturday, where Wadeck will look to defend her CCAA individual title.

Zack Torres (Crescenta Valley High, 2009) UCLA cross-country, freshman: Torres, the two-time News-Press Male Athlete of the Year, continues to make his presence felt for the Bruins.

In UCLA’s last race, the Pre-Nationals at Indiana State University on Saturday, the Bruins finished 23rd in the 8K race with Torres finishing fourth among the Bruins and 138th overall in 25:33.5

The Bruins are set to run again on Oct. 30 at the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach.

Cristina Lucas (Glendale resident) Wellesley College cross-country, freshman: Lucas, a 2009 Notre Dame graduate, helped Wellesley to first place at the 28th annual Seven Sisters Championship in Massachusetts on Saturday.

Wellesley won its first title at the event since 2005 with 33 points, as Lucas finished seventh overall and third on her team in 19 minutes 25 seconds and in finishing in the top 10 made the 2009 All-Championship Team.

In the team’s previous race on Oct. 10 at the New England Intercollegiate Championships in Boston, Wellesley ran against Division I, II and III competition and took 27th out of 49 squads. Lucas was her team’s No. 2 finisher, taking 155th overall in 19:55.

Lucas and Wellesley host the Wellesley Invitational on Saturday.

Jesse Ayers (Glendale Community College, 2006) Dakota Wesleyan football, senior: Dakota Wesleyan was trounced by Briar Cliff, 33-7, on Saturday, dropping the Tigers to 2-5.

Still, Ayers continued his solid season, hauling in his team’s only touchdown — a 43-yard grab from Russell McGuire in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with three catches for 60 yards.

Ayers has 34 catches for 522 yards and five touchdowns so far this season.

Dakota travels to face University of Sioux Falls on Saturday.
