The Sacramento State men’s basketball team was picked to finish last in the Big Sky Conference in the media and coaches’ polls Wednesday.
The Hornets went 2-27 overall last season and beat Idaho State for their only Big Sky win.
Sac State begins its second season under coach Brian Katz on Nov. 13 at Rice. The Hornets open Big Sky play Dec. 5 at home against Weber State, which was picked in both polls to repeat as the regular-season champion.
Weber State received 23 of 28 first-place votes in the media poll and four votes for No. 1 from the coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team. The Wildcats went 21-10 overall and 15-1 in the Big Sky last season.

• League coaches picked the William Jessup men to finish second in the California Pacific Conference. The Warriors received one first-place vote and tallied 41 points overall, a point behind Holy Names, which got five first-place votes. William Jessup went 13-3 in conference play last season.

Unseeded Gabriela Knutson, who trains at the Gold River Racquet Club and plays for the Czech Republic, reached the girls 12-and-under quarterfinals in the recent Nike Junior Tour International Masters 2009 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Knutson upset second-seeded Julia Payola of Spain 7-5, 6-4 in the second round before falling to unseeded Zainab El Houari of Morocco 7-5, 6-0.
Eighth-seeded Anastasiya Komardina of Russia beat El Houari 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

• The UC Davis men’s soccer team (5-10-1, 2-4-1 Big West Conference) played to a scoreless tie against host Cal State Northridge.
