County continues $4.25 million state program that subsidizes college tuition

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to continue a $4.25 million, state-funded program that subsidizes college tuition for those working in qualified child care centers.

The program offers stipends of $750 to $2,000 to offset the cost of college courses taken by child care workers at centers that are funded by the state or serve children receiving state aid. The idea is to reduce teacher turnover and promote teacher training in those preschools and day care centers.

During the county’s 2008-09 fiscal year, nearly 2,000 child care workers took advantage of the program.

Sixty-nine participating employees received associate of arts degrees, 93 received bachelor of arts degrees and 17 received master of arts degrees during those 12 months.

An additional cash payment is offered on graduation if teachers complete a degree in child development or a related field.
