Enjoy Spring Break

by Dr. Jolene Koester on March 30th, 2010 under Alert, Campus messages, Communications, Students

Next week, April 5–9, classes will be out of session for spring break at California State University, Northridge. In addition, most University offices will observe campuswide state budget closure days April 6–9.

The week will be the rare occasion when nearly the entire campus community has a chance to experience “spring break” at the same time as our students. While I know furloughs have significantly affected everyone’s ability to get all their work done and curtailed some of the personal things we normally would do for fun and relaxation, I nevertheless hope it will be a time for everyone to unwind, spend quality time with family and friends, and to re-energize for the remaining weeks of the academic year. Given the ongoing challenges we face in these uncertain times, and the amazing strength and unconditional commitment everyone has shown over the past year, each of us deserves this time off to regenerate and enjoy.

My best wishes to all of you for a safe and fun spring break. For those of you who may be traveling, please note that the California State University has asked its campuses to remind everyone that University-related travel to countries is prohibited where there is a U.S. State Department travel warning. Given that Mexico is a popular destination during spring break, campuses have been particularly asked to advise people about the current State Department advisory for certain cities and states in Mexico. While vacation travel, of course, is a personal matter, anyone traveling to an area where an advisory exists should always take care to exercise good judgment and remain aware of their surroundings while also enjoying themselves. The travel advisory link above includes common sense information and other resources to help ensure a safe trip.

Campus Budget News Website and Budget FAQs Updated

by Dr. Jolene Koester on March 25th, 2010 under Alert, Budget, Campus messages

Please note that the Campus Budget News website has been re-organized and updated, and a new Budget FAQ has been posted. (All previous FAQs have been archived and can still be accessed at the Campus Budget News page.)  A link to the University’s Campus Budget Page, including direct links to the general budget fund and lottery budget funds, are now included at the Campus Budget News site.

The changes provide the most up-to-date information about the state and University budgets.

2010 Matador Athletics Hall of Fame

by Dr. Jolene Koester on March 23rd, 2010 under Achievements, Athletics

Last month, I had the great pleasure to attend the Matador Hall of Fame luncheon honoring a new group of inductees. This year’s honorees were Priscilla Rouse Becker ’90, Terry Craven ’70, the late Dorothea “Granny” Heitz ’69, Garrett Noel ’94, and the 1967 Junior Rose Bowl  football team.

This annual event is an opportunity to celebrate the important contributions that intercollegiate athletics makes to the University, and to remember the rich tradition of competitive excellence that exists here. The successes and accomplishments of the outstanding young men and women who have competed for Cal State Northridge over the years remain memorable touchstones for the athletes and the people who supported and rooted for them.

The day also reminded me that we celebrate not just the athlete and his or her achievements on the playing field, but the totality of the student-athlete. The student-athlete not only focuses on physical prowess also but on academic achievement, which requires enormous discipline and engagement. The student-athletes and others who attended the luncheon remembered their days as Cal State Northridge student-athletes fondly, and many have maintained strong ties to the campus.

I was fortunate to know personally one of the honorees, the late Dorothea “Granny” Heitz. Granny was a longtime and beloved fixture at Northridge games and other events. As an alumna, she remained engaged with the campus throughout her life. Because of her work, the Dorothea “Granny” Heitz Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award is named in her honor and presented every year at the Alumni Association’s Volunteer Service Awards. She and the other honorees at the luncheon are wonderful examples of how athletics help bring a University community together.

Participate in the 2010 U.S. Census

by Dr. Jolene Koester on March 19th, 2010 under Alert, Campus messages, Communications, Community

Every 10 years, the federal government—as mandated by the U.S. Constitution—is required to obtain an accurate count of all people living in the United States. This count affects how much federal funding is distributed to our region. Despite every effort to get an accurate count, every Census results in an undercount. In 2000, the City of Los Angeles had the second highest undercount in the country, resulting in the loss of $206 million over 10 years to the region.

As a college campus that serves the community, we have a special responsibility to help ensure an accurate Census count. In addition to a civic responsibility, this is the first Census in which college students living away from home while attending college are counted where they are living.

Like faculty and staff, students living off campus began receiving their Census forms in the mail on March 15. Students living in on-campus residence halls will receive their Census forms in April or May. Forms should be filled out and returned as soon as possible after receiving them.

It’s critical that we do our part to get an accurate count for our region. For these reasons, I urge everyone to look for your Census packet in the mail and complete and return the forms as soon as possible. And, encourage others to do the same. Remember, our region will benefit greatly from everyone’s participation.

More information about the Census can be obtained by calling the Los Angeles Office of Census 2010 at 213-978-0301, or by visiting the 2010 Census website. This includes information about how information provided in the Census forms is completely confidential.

Thank you for doing your part to ensure an accurate count in 2010.
