Congratulations Class of 2010!

by Dr. Jolene Koester on May 17th, 2010 under Achievements, Commencement, Students

This week California State University, Northridge honors the Class of 2010. More than 10,000 students are eligible to receive their degrees this week at eight college ceremonies. While every student’s journey is individual and unique, the diplomas they have earned demonstrate a shared commitment to academic achievement and service. For this great accomplishment, our students and the family and friends who supported them deserve our respect and congratulations.

The past year has one full of tremendous change and uncertainty. Our students have seen the country and our state grapple with serious fiscal difficulties that have affected them personally and impacted the resources available to them at Cal State Northridge. And graduating students across the nation face one of the most challenging and competitive hiring environments in years.

But despite these difficulties, students continue to recognize the importance of a university degree—not just for achieving their professional goals and increasing their earning power, but also for personal fulfillment. The challenges our communities face will require the gifts and contributions of a smart, well-educated population, and Cal State Northridge is proud to play a role in preparing students for the demands they will face as the next generation of leaders.

So please join me in congratulating the outstanding group of students Cal State Northridge graduates this week, including those who will be recognized at the annual Honors Convocation, which traditionally kicks off commencement week. This is a time for celebration and joy, and I hope everyone will have an opportunity to share their good wishes and this special moment with the graduates.

Honoring Faculty

by Dr. Jolene Koester on May 14th, 2010 under Achievements, Campus messages, Events, Faculty

Next week, California State University, Northridge will graduate a new class of students. It seems fitting, therefore, that in the same week, the University will honor many of the faculty who have dedicated their lives and careers to educating and training these students and preparing them for postgraduate life.

Next Monday, May 17, the day before the formal start of commencement, the University will host the Honored Faculty Reception. In addition to presenting awards for outstanding and distinguished achievement for areas including teaching, counseling, scholarship, service, and librarianship, the University will formally recognize our new emeriti faculty members. Faculty members who have completed 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years of service also will be recognized.

So before we direct our focus next week on the students who are now moving on to the next phase of their lives, let’s pay tribute to the important and indispensible contributions and hard work of our faculty. Their teaching, scholarship, research, and commitment are the source of the University’s outstanding reputation, and played the primary role in preparing our new graduates for successful and fulfilling futures.

Marking the Close of the Academic Year

by Dr. Jolene Koester on May 6th, 2010 under Campus messages, Communications

Please note that the President’s annual convocation to mark the start of the fall 2010 semester is scheduled for Thursday, August 19, 2010.

Last summer the University began facing some very significant challenges, among them drastic campus budget reductions, reduced student enrollment, student registration fee increases, increased competition for a reduced number of classes offered, and of course furloughs, which was uncharted territory for all of us.

As we look back a year later, I am grateful and deeply moved by how all of us at Cal State Northridge drew closer together to face and overcome these difficulties. Rather than simply resigning ourselves to a lower bar, we remained focused as a community on what is important (our students and mission) and solved problems creatively and efficiently. The spirit of this institutional effort was nowhere more evident than in the very complimentary results of the site visit conducted last February by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, as part of the University’s reaccreditation process. The site team found a strong culture of collaboration on campus despite these challenges, specifically because we have a strong sense of ourselves and our mission and goals.

And in two weeks we will see our hard work come to fruition when we graduate the class of 2010 from California State University, Northridge.

Given the challenges of the past year and the outstanding work faculty and staff members continue to do in difficult circumstances, I want to again express to you my depth of appreciation and admiration for your hard work and commitment on behalf of the University and its students.

I recognize we do not have answers yet for what will occur in the coming year, but I promise the campus community that we will apprise you as soon as we have definitive information. In the meantime, I hope all of you will have an opportunity to take advantage of the summer months to enjoy and replenish yourselves, and to spend meaningful time with family and friends. Each of us surely deserves it.

Best wishes for a joyful, productive, and satisfying summer.

Men’s Volleyball in Final Four for NCAA National Championship

by Dr. Jolene Koester on May 3rd, 2010 under Achievements, Athletics

Congratulations to the men’s volleyball team for earning the at large bid to the NCAA men’s volleyball championship! Although the team lost the conference championship game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation to Stanford University this past Friday, April 30, the team’s overall outstanding performance throughout the season led to its selection by the NCAA to play in the national championship playoffs.

Northridge, currently ranked second in the nation, will play Penn State this Thursday, May 6. The winner of that game will face either first-ranked Stanford or Ohio State for the national championship, which is scheduled on Saturday, May 8.

The men’s volleyball success follows many outstanding performances the past few weeks by Matador athletes. On April 25, for instance, the women’s polo team played for the Big West Conference championship but lost to UC Irvine. And on April 30, the women’s tennis team played in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference championship series but fell to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

My congratulations to all the student-athletes for their strong performance throughout the year, and best wishes to the men’s volleyball team in their quest for the national championship!
