At the beginning of June, I had the great pleasure to participate in the 44th Annual Staff Service Awards and Excellence Recognition Event, which honors the contributions of Cal State Northridge’s staff, who are essential to the University’s work and excellence. The ceremony is always enjoyable and festive, and a wonderful way to celebrate the close of the academic year as everyone looks forward to the summer.
The theme for this year’s event was “Recognize, Refocus, Rise”—an apt description of the campus community’s collective effort this past year to overcome significant challenges while continuing to move forward. With this in mind, the occasion was an opportunity for the senior administrators and me to pay tribute to the faculty and staff who have sustained their dedication and high spirits this past year despite the many challenges related to state budget cuts and furloughs. The joy and pride evident during the celebration reminded me again of how fortunate I am to lead such an outstanding institution.
In addition to honoring employees in all divisions who have served the University for 5, 10,15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years, the University also presented 12 employee Merit Awards to staff who have demonstrated exceptional performance and integrity in service to the University; and a Team Award for a collaborative project or initiative that brings about radical, positive change, which leads in turn to improved performance, increased productivity, and/or reduced costs.
The event traditionally culminates with my presentation of the President’s Award to an individual who is a top performer at the University and through his or her work exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of Cal State Northridge.
Merit Awards were presented to Ramon Alvarado (Oviatt Library), Dean Arnold (Oviatt Library), Sharon Aronoff (Klotz Student Health Center), Kate Berggren (Academic Technology), Doretta Crawford (President’s Office), Shally Dhiman (Undergraduate Studies), Ederlina “Lynne” Landeta (Klotz Student Health Center), Cindy Mitchell (Human Resources), Linda V. Noblejas (President’s Office), Edward Rich (Klotz Student Health Center), Pat Tabidian (Recreation and Tourism Management), and Braden Villenueva (Athletics).
This year’s Team Award was presented to the group responsible for developing myNorthridge Student Portal 2.0, led by Chris Xanthos (Information Technology) and Mary Ann Cummins-Prager (Student Affairs).
The 2010 President’s Award honoree was Leta Chow, Department of Psychology (see photo at the top of this post). Nominated by Department Chair Carrie Saetermoe and Professor Judith Friedman, Ms. Chow’s outstanding work in support of the department, its administrators, its faculty, and students, and her exemplary attitude, professionalism, and work ethic, were all cited as reasons for her selection.
My congratulations to Ms. Chow and to everyone who was honored at the event for their exemplary service to the University. Because of the contributions of staff, the University is able to fulfill its mission and enjoy a reputation as a campus that is regionally focused and nationally recognized. My thanks, as well, to Human Resources and the volunteer planning committee that made the event another memorable success.
