Nutrition counseling can help individuals meet their health goals and improve conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.<sup>1<\/sup> The Marilyn Magaram Center (MMC) offers a variety of products and services to promote health and nutrition. Today, we are going to explore one of the most popular services at the MMC &#8211; Nutrition Counseling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutrition Counseling is a personalized one-on-one counseling session with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). RDNs are health professionals that are knowledgeable in nutritional science, medical nutrition therapy and food science.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criteria to Become an RDN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are food and nutrition experts. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics<sup>2<\/sup>, to become a credentialed RDN an individual must complete the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hold a bachelor\u2019s degree with coursework through an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited program (in 2024, the minimum degree requirement will be a master\u2019s degree)<\/li><li>Complete an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program (1200 hours)<\/li><li>Pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)<\/li><li>Uphold continuing professional education requirements to maintain registration<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists-624x624.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.csun.edu\/nutritionexperts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2020\/04\/RD-v-Nutritionists.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutritionist vs. Dietitian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">&nbsp;In the United States, the general term &#8220;nutritionist&#8221; is not regulated or protected.<sup>3<\/sup> Only individuals that have met the RDN criteria listed above are credentialed as a \u201cRegistered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)&#8221; and\/or &#8220;Registered Dietitian (RD),&#8221; which are interchangeable terms. When you visit an RDN, they will review your eating habits, lifestyle, and nutrition-related medical conditions. By having a thorough assessment of your health and nutritional status, an RDN would create a personalized nutrition plan just for you.&nbsp;&nbsp;The RDN will guide you and support you along the way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How an RDN Can Help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics<sup>4<\/sup>, common reasons to seek the help of an RDN include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;Meal planning and preparation&nbsp;<\/li><li>Digestive problems<\/li><li>Individualized nutrition advice<\/li><li>Understanding how food impacts health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure<\/li><li>&nbsp;Gastric bypass surgery considerations or management<\/li><li>&nbsp;New mom, current pregnancy, or trying to conceive<\/li><li>&nbsp;Learning to have a healthy relationship with food<\/li><li>&nbsp;Trying to gain, lose, or maintain weight<\/li><li>&nbsp;Caring for an aging parent<\/li><li>&nbsp;Improve athletic performance<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RDNs in Healthcare Teams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a systematic review of type 2 diabetes prevention programs, interventions that included nutrition counseling by RDNs improved glucose levels, triglyceride levels, waist circumference and blood pressure.<sup>5<\/sup> RDNs are critical members in healthcare teams as they provide on-going  nutrition education and follow-up. In the pediatric population, RDNs assess the growth and development of children and can adjust eating behaviors for them.<sup>6<\/sup> RDNs help individuals living with diabetes understand the relationship of food choices and blood sugar control.<sup>6<\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Online Nutrition Counseling Appointments Now Available <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What nutrition-related goal(s) are a priority to you?
