With over 20 million Americans participating, 8 million tons of food were produced and morale went up significantly, thus adopting the term &#8220;victory garden.&#8221; They\u00a0were part of the WWII effort that raised food\u2014approximately 40% of the fruits and vegetables. Here\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/25\/dining\/victory-gardens-coronavirus.html\">recent story<\/a> in the NY Times that highlights this history.\u00a0<br>       <br>In light of current events, the Institute for Sustainability launched a &#8220;virtual victory garden&#8221; program in which we are distributing seeds through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csun.edu\/sustainability\/victory-garden-2020-resources\">Seeds of Victory Program<\/a> and holding online workshops with expert gardeners to teach people how to grow their own food anywhere &#8211; in kitchens, balconies, and backyards.\u00a0<br>       <br>Our goal is to empower and equip individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to secure their own fresh, nutritious food. In doing so, we hope to encourage self-sustainability and a sense of connectedness during a time of isolation.  Our Program is open to the entire CSUN community; up to 500 people will receive seeds.\u00a0Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csun.edu\/sustainability\/victory-garden-2020-resources\">program website<\/a> to request your seeds! <br><br>Our first workshop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OUukevJ9-1s&amp;t=6s\">&#8220;Gardening in Crisis,&#8221;<\/a> was led by organic farmer, Scott Murray. He shared photos of his beautiful garden and gave attendees tips on how to start growing food outdoors or in a greenhouse.<br><br>There are a ton of great resources online to get you started with your Victory Garden! Oregon State offers a free <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/workspace.oregonstate.edu\/course\/master-gardener-series-vegetable-gardening\" target=\"_blank\">Master Gardening Series: Vegetable Gardening<\/a><\/strong>. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/greenamerica.org\/climate-victory-gardening-101\" target=\"_blank\">G<\/a><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/greenamerica.org\/climate-victory-gardening-101\" target=\"_blank\">reen America: Climate Victory Gardening 101<\/a><\/strong> provides a toolkit with tangible actions for growing\u00a0your own healthy food and garden.\u00a0 <br><br>If <strong>apps<\/strong> are more your style, check out:<br><a href=\"https:\/\/opengaarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Open Gaarden<\/a>\u00a0brings together history and technology to reimagine what it means to live in this urbanized world, revealing public gardens and nature hidden in plain sight. <br><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">iNaturalist<\/a>\u00a0helps you identify the plants and animals around you.\u00a0You can use it to record your own observations, get help with identifications, collaborate with others to collect information for a common purpose, or access the observational data collected by iNaturalist users.<br><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seedtospoon.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seed to Spoon<\/a>\u00a0makes it simple for you to grow your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs in your backyard or patio economically, efficiently, and sustainably!
